At James Martin Middle School, we provide the students with a comprehensive developmental program addressing academic, career and personal/social development. A comprehensive school counseling program requires that counselors spend majority of their time in direct services with the students. We spend 70% of that time with students and 30% with administrative tasks.
The counseling program focuses on enhancing student success by addressing the individual needs of students. Counselors interact and work closely with teachers and principals to create a positive atmosphere for learning. Since parent involvement is an integral part of student success, counselors work with teachers, parents, and the community to form partnerships designed to help students achieve their maximum potential.
I am very excited to say that this year will be the best one yet! The counseling department will provide activities and groups for the students during the year to let them know that I am here for them any time they may need me.
What is a School Counselor? School counselors provide support for all students by promoting Academic, Career and Social Domains. School counselors are trained and highly qualified as counselors and educators. They work to meet the academic, personal, social, career, and emotional needs of students. They work through a comprehensive counseling program that includes individual counseling, group counseling, and classroom guidance. They serve as community liaisons and as advocates in their schools. School counselors work closely with students, teachers, administration, parents, and community members.

Confidentiality Agreement As a counselor, confidentiality is a driving force in our profession. Confidentiality means that everything a students tells a counselor stays private unless it meets one of the exceptions. There are three cases in which we are obligated to break confidentiality: 1) We are aware that a student has intent to do harm to self or others or is suicidal, 2) We suspect child abuse or neglect, or 3) We are court ordered to disclose information. This confidentiality clause ensures that students can trust their counselor and that the counselor is abiding by the professional ethics code of ASCA and ACA.
